I do not have a problem with cancer in my family. Still, I work hard to stay out of the high risk groups. My husband comes from a 'high risk' family. But, when I started to look into his family's diet, exercise practices, and lifestyle. This lead me to wonder if his family's 'problem' is self induced. For one, they do not exercise. Second, they do not eat vegetables and fruit.
It amazes me to think that a person can 'give themselves cancer' - or if they get cancer, they can destroy their chances of survival. The important thing to remember is that you need to start avoiding disease on a daily basis. You can't wait until you have cancer and then try to prevent it.
One-Third of Cancer Deaths Could Be Avoided
Copyright © 2005 Daily News Central
Of the seven million worldwide cancer deaths reported in 2001, 35 percent were attributable to nine well-known behavioral and environmental risk factors, according to an analysis published in The Lancet.
Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and a network of collaborators made the calculation by estimating mortality for 12 types of cancer linked to the nine risk factors in seven World Bank regions for that year.
They also looked at how the risks, and the cancers they cause, were distributed over the regions of the world. This is the first assessment of the role of health risks in cancer deaths globally and regionally.
Risk Factor Analysis
The researchers analyzed data from the Comparative Risk Assessment project and World Health Organization databases to determine the level of risk factors in different world regions, and separately for men and women.
They also considered how hazardous each risk factor might be. The analysis covered all high-income countries together, and separated low-income and middle-income countries into geographical regions: East Asia and Pacific, South Asia, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The nine risk factors:
- overweight and obesity
- low fruit and vegetable intake
- physical inactivity
- smoking
- alcohol use
- unsafe sex
- urban air pollution
- indoor smoke from household use of coal
- contaminated injections in healthcare settings
Alcohol, Smoking Play Large Roles
More than one in every three of the seven million deaths from cancer worldwide were caused by these nine potentially modifiable risk factors (2.43 million), the researchers found, with alcohol and smoking playing large roles in all income levels and regions.
Worldwide, the nine risk factors caused 1.6 million cancer deaths among men and 830,000 among women. Smoking alone is estimated to have caused 21 percent of deaths from cancer worldwide.
In high-income countries, these nine risks caused 760,000 cancer deaths. Smoking, alcohol, and overweight and obesity were the most important causes of cancer in these nations.
In low- and middle-income regions, the nine risks caused 1.67 million cancer deaths. Smoking, alcohol consumption, and low fruit and vegetable intake were the leading risk factors for these deaths.
Sexual transmission of human papillomavirus is the leading risk factor for cervical cancer in women in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where access to cervical screening is also limited.
Among low- and middle-income regions, Europe and Central Asia had the highest proportion of death from cancer from the nine risk factors studied; 39 percent of 825,000 cancer deaths in the low- and middle-income countries of Europe and Central Asia were caused by these risks.
The effects were even larger among men; one half of cancer deaths among men in the low- and middle-income countries of Europe and Central Asia were caused by these nine risks.
Behaviors and Environments
"These results clearly show that many globally important types of cancer are preventable by changes in lifestyle behaviors and environmental interventions," comments Majid Ezzati, senior author of the study and assistant professor of international health at HSPH.
"To win the war against cancer, we must focus not just on advances in biomedical technologies, but also on technologies and policies that change the behaviors and environments that cause those cancers," he adds.
The study, "Causes of cancer in the world: comparative risk assessment of nine behavioral and environmental risk factors," was funded by the National Institute on Aging and by the Disease Control Priorities Project.

. Breast Cancer- Top Ten Things Every Woman Should Know
Every woman should be aware of the risk factors and change those she can to lower her risk of developing breast cancer in her life.
Women who are not active physically, smoke or consume a lot of alcohol are at higher risk to develop breast cancer. Women who have their first child at a later age or have never given birth are at higher risk to develop breast cancer. Women who had their first period at an earlier age (less than 12 years old) are at higher risk for breast cancer. Woman who have close family members who had develop breast cancer are at higher risk for themselves. Women who are older. The further a woman advances in life, the higher her probability of developing breast cancer. Women who experience a late menopause (after 55 years old) have an increase risk of developing breast cancer.
There is hope however and certain measures have proven to help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer for a woman. It is recommended to exercise regularly, lose any excess weight, lower alcohol consumption and stop smoking. It is also proven that women who breastfeed their babies are at lower risks to develop breast cancer.
Certain measures, by finding breast cancer at an earlier stage can lower the complication rate and morbidity associated with this condition. The two most recommended measures are to do a mammogram exam every two years after the age of 50 (or earlier if a woman has risk factors) and doing a breast self-examination. It is also recommended for a woman to visit her doctor regularly. One has to know that about two thirds of breast tumours are found by the woman herself upon doing her self-examination.
Many organizations and industries have joined forces to push back breast cancer and one can only encourage them by donating time or money for this worthy cause. There are many researches on breast cancer conducted worldwide and it is expected that the near future will see the decline of this devastating affliction.

Breast Cancer - Myths
An individual will probably get breast cancer if her mother or grandmother had it.
If an individual's mother or grandmother has had breast cancer does not necessarily mean that they will end up with it even though they are in a higher risk group. Most women who end up getting breast cancer do not have a family history of it. It is recommended that you have a mammogram done if your mother, sister, grandmother or daughter had or has breast cancer.
Myth: Breast cancer is caused by the birth control pill.
This is not true. Contraceptive pills have small quantities of the hormones progesterone and estrogen which is often linked with increased risk of breast cancer. Despite the presence of these two hormones and the prolonged use for a period of 10 years and more it does not cause breast cancer. Birth control pills have some benefits too. They are, they decrease the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer, they relieve pelvic inflammatory disease, menstrual disorders and they improve the bone mineral density.
Myth: Only women get breast cancer - Men do not get the disease.
This is not true. Though the percentage is smaller men do get breast cancer, therefore, it is important for men too to exam themselves monthly and report any changes noticed to their doctor immediately. In 2004, it was estimated that around 1450 men with breast cancer and that 470 will eventually die from it.
Myth: Lawn chemicals, pesticides and dry cleaning services cause breast cancer.
A few small studies have shown this as a possibility but larger studies on this subject have indicated otherwise.
Myth: You are likely to get breast cancer if you have a risk factor.
This is not so. Even if you have a breast cancer gene abnormality, which is one of the stronger risk factors, it does not mean you will end up with cancer. 40% to 80% of women with an inherited genetic abnormality, that is, BRCA1 or BRCA2 may sometime in their life develop breast cancer. 20% to 60% will not develop it. The presence of all other risk factors poses very little threat.
Myth: If you have a lump in your breast you will get breast cancer.
This is not so as it is found that eight out of ten lumps are not malignant or cancerous. If you discover any abnormalities or even a persistent lump in your breast it is best you consult your physician at once as early detection would result in better treatment and recovery.
Myth: Breast cancer will end up in death.
This is not so. 80% of the breast cancer diagnosed women show no spread of the cancer cells beyond the breast or to nearby lymph nodes. Also 80% of these women continue to live for a further five years and some even longer.
Myth: Younger women run a higher risk of breast cancer than older women.
As a woman gets older the risk of her getting breast cancer is also higher as age is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. It is therefore important for a woman starting from the age of about forty to self examine her breasts monthly for any lumps or irregularities; get regular mammograms and a clinical breast examination done yearly in order to detect an early development of cancer. Women in the age group 20 - 40 should also carry out monthly self breast examination and clinical breast examinations every three years or so.

The Genetics Of Breast Cancer
How does genetics affect your chances of getting breast cancer?
Most of the inherited cases of breast cancer have been linked with the two genes Breast Cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and Breast Cancer gene 2 (BRCA2). These two genes play a role in keeping the breast cells growing normally and preventing any cancerous cell growth. However, abnormal BRCA 1 and BRCA2 gene increase an individual's risk from breast cancer. These genes usually account for almost up to 10 percent of all breast cancers.
Whilst a majority of women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease, the women who are diagnosed with the disease and also have an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene often are women with a family history of the disease.
These abnormal BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can either be acquired or inherited. Acquired is non hereditary and the gene becomes abnormal as a result of an error in how the gene reproduces, wear and tear, exposure to toxic material, hormonal influence, diet, environmental factors or sometimes even unknown factors. Inherited from parent, that is one normal gene from one parent and one abnormal gene from the other parent. They are born with this abnormal gene. 85 percent to 90 percent of breast cancers are as a result of acquired genetic abnormalities.
The chances that an individual will have an abnormal breast cancer gene are:
. If a single individual in the family suffers from both ovarian and breast cancer.
. If on either the individual's mother's or father's side sisters, aunts, mother or grandmothers have had breast cancer diagnosed before the age of 50.
. A male in the individual's family has had breast cancer.
. The women in the individual's family have had cancer in both their breasts.
If the individual is from Eastern Europe.
If an individual's mother or father has an abnormal breast cancer gene, the chances of the gene passing onto that individual is 50 percent. The chances of the individual passing it onto their children is 25 percent, provided the father does not have an abnormal gene. It does not necessarily mean that all family members will have an abnormal gene if one family member has it.
Men and breast cancer
Men are at an increased risk from breast cancer if they inherit the abnormal breast cancer genes. Over a man's lifetime, the risk is about 6 percent, which is about 80 times more than for a man with no abnormal breast cancer genes.
Research has also shown that men who have an abnormal breast cancer gene are more likely to get prostate cancer than men who do not have it. This abnormal gene also has the same increased effect on cancer of the digestive tract or on cancer of the skin.
Go Bra-Less and be Free from Breast Cancer
increasing rate of breast cancer has changed so many things about how an average lady should dress, eat or live. It is estimated that every two minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer and every thirteen minutes some dies as a result of breast cancer. This is an alarming record. It has also been shown that breast cancer tends to be higher in cultures where bras are worn frequently compared to where bras are absent.
In a report titled 'Dress to Kill, the link between breast cancer and bras', the authors examined the habits of 4700 American women, nearly half of them had breast cancer before compiling the report. It was discovered that wearing a bra for 12 hours daily increased the risk for breast cancer, cystic breasts, breast pain, breast tenderness and other breast related conditions. Ladies who had bras on for 18-24 hours daily have over a 100% increased incidence of breast cancer compared to those who don't wear bras at all. It is quite funny, but what this suggests is that by wearing a bra you are 3-4 times more likely to get breast cancer than by smoking cigarettes.
You may be wondering 'why is this so?' but the facts available are that bras create constant pressure on the breast, which compresses and constricts and hinders the lymphatic movement to the chest area. If you are a woman who wears a bra and you see red marks and lines after taking your bra off, you are at a greater risk for breast cancer.
The role of lymph is to flush out toxins and debris from tissues. If this flow is impaired, like when wearing a bra, tissues get toxic. We also impair toxin release by using underarm deodorants, which plug up and block our pores.
In another similar study done in the UK with a hundred women who suffer from fibrocystic breast disease, it was discovered that going bra free for three months had an astounding effect on the cure of these womens̢۪ disease. This study showed how effective this single treatment of going bra free was in overcoming a particular breast condition.
The bra has been a fundamental part of female clothing for so long, no matter what it is associated with it, I understand that it isn't going to be an easy task to suddenly drop a life long habit, not when it has to do with such crucial part of the body. This is understandable. You cannot just go bra free overnight but if you must wear a bra, try it along the lines below which will most likely reduce the risk associated with the wearing of a bra:
- Don't wear tight bras. Make sure the bra has a loose fit and always remove it when it is not necessary to wear it.
- Choose a bra with no under wires. These wires block the energy meridians from moving freely through their natural cycles.
- Around your menstrual periods, use a larger size bra as increased oestrogen levels in the blood during this period cause tissues to retain fluids making the breasts larger and the bra tighter.
- Stop the use of deodorants/antiperspirants, if you can. Wash your armpits often with soap and water instead.
- Bathe daily. The body releases 30% of all the toxins it produces through the skin.
- Use a shower filter that filters out chlorine. Chlorine also causes several forms of cancer. As you shower, your skin and lungs are absorbing huge amounts of chlorine.
- Occasionally incorporate Poke Root tincture into your diet to help the lymph flow more easily (especially if you have little white dots around the outside of your irises. This is known as a Lymphatic Rosary and is a sign of a slow or sluggish lymphatic system.)
- Sleep naked or in a stretchy T-shirt. Women who wear cotton or nylon non-stretchable materials while they sleep and who roll over often, can cut circulation off as these materials resist stretching.
- And most importantly wear bras only when it is completely necessary, this will reduce the number of hours you wear bra a day to the barest minimum.

Exercise and Women's Breast Health
It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. In 2003 (the most recent year numbers are available), 181,646 women and 1,826 men were diagnosed with breast cancer 41,619 women and 379 men died from breast cancer" 1 The good news for women is that there are things they can do to reduce their chances of contracting this disease. We know that regular exercise is extremely important for many reasons concerning our overall health: weight loss, cardiovascular strengthening, balancing blood sugars, and much more, but did you know that exercise might also help you avoid breast cancer?
My clinical experience brings to me women who are experiencing signs and symptoms of estrogen dominance and there is evidence that this estrogen dominance may lead to breast cancer over a period of time. Dr. John Lee states in his book What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause: "Since many women in their mid-thirties begin to have nonovulating cycles, they are producing much less progesterone than expected, but still producing normal (or more) estrogen....They develop signs of estrogen dominance relative to progesterone deficiency resulting in fluid retention, weight gain (especially around the hips and torso), depression and decreased libido." 2 But this extra estrogen could have a more ominous effect.
Dr. Bob Arnot, in his excellent book The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet, cites many good studies that associate high estrogen levels with a high risk of breast cancer: "Researchers at NYU measured estrogen levels in women long before they ever developed breast cancer years later the NYU health study found that those post-menopausal women who developed breast cancer had a markedly higher amount of estrogen measured in their blood than those who did not have cancer." Arnot also points out that exercise intercepts the estrogen pathway at several critical junctures.
This results in a decrease in estrogen dominance. The more women exercised the less likely they were to get breast cancer. In America, a study at the University of Southern California of 1,000 women concluded that those who exercised 3.8 hours or more a week had less than half the breast cancer of those who remained inactive. 3 Here's what I recommend for my patients: For young women-high intensity aerobic activity 4 or more hrs/week For middle-aged women-moderate aerobic activity 4 hrs a week. Moderate intensity of exercise helps to stabilize insulin levels and lower body fat better than more intense exercise.
Also, moderate intensity exercise may prevent adrenal fatigue in middle-aged women as compared to high intensity aerobic exercises. Obviously, if you have had limited or no exercise recently you should start slowly and work up to the 4 hour/week mark. The important thing is consistency and persistence in following your exercise program. So what are you waiting for? Research For The Detection And Treatment Of Cancer
Much has been made in the papers recently of the cost of drugs to prolong the life of breast cancer patients, resulting in a post code lottery as to whether or not your local health care authority can afford it.
One sufferer has taken her local authority to court to try to win the right to buy Avastin privately while still receiving the bulk of her care through the NHS. Unfortunately, the case has dragged on so long that doctors fear, even if she wins, it will be too late for her. In this case, a life insurance policy could have paid for the drug needed but probably ended up lining solicitor's pockets in the legal battle.
Having said this, advancements are being made every day in new detection methods and treatment of cancers that, hopefully, one day will be available to all. But, you have to ask, with medicine manufacturers actually employing sales people now, is it all too much of a business and will we ever really see the benefits?
Recent medical breakthroughs to make the papers are the saliva test soon to be available through dentists that can detect hormone changes that can lead to breast cancer. It is claimed the test will be as quick and easy as a pregnancy test. The test will cost around 10 pounds but if we pay for this will we be able to get treatment for it on the NHS?
Another treatment for breast cancer to be on the market shortly involves the use of, vesicular stomatatis virus, which normally causes flu in horses. The virus is being harnessed for its ability to hunt down and kill tumour cells without harming healthy tissue or causing pain or hair loss. VSV has been found to kick start the immune system, making it ideal as a follow up treatment to normal chemotherapy and radiotherapy drastically reducing the chance of reoccurrence.
Cancer is the number one claim on life insurance policies. Breakthroughs in cancer detection and treatments are being researched by scientists constantly, hopefully one day finding a cure and reducing life insurance premiums.
A camera the size of a 1 pounds coin is now being used in hospitals to help detect various illnesses including internal bleeding and tumours. It is not always possible to see these with standard x ray equipment but this camera is successful in 92% of cases. The camera capsule is swallowed following a two hour fast. It will work its way through the system over 24 hours transmitting pictures back to an externally worn receiver which can then be interpreted by a doctor.
With its wide angle view and automatic light control the camera can capture images at a rate of 18 frames per second. This will lead to swifter treatment, longer health and life and hopefully, less claims necessary on life insurance policies.
Health expert Catherine Harvey looks at the medical advancements that should help reduce life insurance premiums. To find out more please visit http://www.theidol.com/

Fried Foods Found to Lead to Breast Cancer Apart From Weight Gain!
The inclination of people towards food can be seen by the number of restaurants and eateries that are opening up even in the small towns and cities leave alone the cosmopolitan areas or the metros. Be it the cinema halls, the colleges and schools, the malls, or the shopping complexes a food joint is a common sight everywhere. This trend points to the fact that food industry is the right place to put in your investments.
Weddings, festivals, birthday parties, getting a new job, getting increments and even at deaths, food is a common feature. All these things are actually incomplete without the aroma of delicious delicacies. There are some people who eat even when unhappy or in a low frame of mind! Food being a necessity, there is nothing wrong in eating, but there are a lot of wrongs in the kind of food that majority of the people eat most of the time. Food is actually the fuel that helps our body to run and function properly. But then the fuel has to be pure and beneficial. Contaminated fuel is not only useless for the body, but can even ruin the body mechanism as it does to an engine. Food that we have nowadays is more often of the latter quality. That is why the number of diseases borne from it are increasingly rapidly. Apart from diseases and a bad health, food that is high on things like fats and lipids lead to disproportioning the body by increasing the weight of the body. Fats and lipids are required by the body but at a certain age and in a certain quantity.
A recent study showed results to this effect. Foods that are high on carbohydrate when fried, roasted, or grilled at a temperature higher than 120 degree Celsius forms a chemical known as acrylamide. Acrylamide has been found to be cancerous. It might lead to breast cancer if consumed frequently. And fried, roasted, or grilled carbohydrate is a common feature in the food of millions of people. French fries, made from fried potatoes, toasted breads, crisp snacks and even coffee which are some of the most frequently consumed foods, may produce acrylamide in the body. Apart from being cancerous these foods also lead to weight gain. And people who are suffering from obesity know the pain, agony and the difficulty of losing even a few ounces from their body. That is why people are fast taking to the weight loss drugs with the hope of shedding weight. Xenical weight loss is quite popular and is being promoted heavily online. People buy xenical with the thought that simply popping a pill will help them get great figures but let me tell you that it is a very false notion. If you want xenical online to work for you remember to club it with exercises and proper diet. This will not only give you better results but will also make you active and energetic. Order xenical only if you are ready to take that extra effort.
One more point that can be added here is that this particular chemical that leads to cancer can also be formed in the body by smoking. Smoking as such is very harmful for women. A lot of problems arise at the time of child birth and even otherwise. Thus if will power is proving to be of no use in giving up the smoke, you people can try out a medicine called Pfizer Chantix that helps a person in giving up smoking.
James Petersen’s expertise on the weight loss drug Xenical is well known and he has written a plethora of articles and pieces on obesity related issues. If you are keen on browsing through his work, visit the website xenicalsplendor.com

The Shocking Truth about Aspirin – It Doesn’t Work!
Aspirin has been around for over half a century. It's primary and "original" use was for pain relief. But when Tylenol and NSAIDs (such as Advil) took over the pain relief field, the aspirin industry "bigwigs" pulled out the "big guns" and went after: heart disease.
What the heck, they figured. After all, a billion-dollar medicine has to go somewhere. And like most businesses, you have to keep growing and finding new "revenue streams" to increase revenue and profits. T he "big killer" of heart disease seemed like a natural avenue to go down. So aspirin decided to acquire "new indications" as a blood-clot fighter and is already widely used to treat and prevent strokes and heart attacks.
It Didn't Work For Apples
Just about every male I know over the age of 60 (including younger men) and many women (BOTH my parents in fact) are taking "an aspirin a day to keep the doctor away." Well, it didn't work for apples and I don't think it works for aspirin either. But that isn't stopping its promoters from telling people it will do that and a whole lot more.
Crazy Claims
Take a quick look at some of the other claims the "Aspirin Institute" is making about its product. The "Institute" strongly hints ("studies suggest that...") that this "miracle drug" cures, decreases, alleviates, or prevents:
- Breast cancer
- Migraine headaches
- Hodgkin's disease Alzheimer's disease
- Prostate cancer
- Cancer of the pancreas
- Colon cancer Birth defects
- Leukemia Immune disorders, including AIDS
And that's just a partial list, But geez ... take a look at the last one - AIDS! Wow, if Aspirin really could do that, it would be a "miracle" drug, right? ...
So the "experts" seem to think that at least 95 percent of the population needs aspirin on a daily basis. But the dangers associated with extensive use of aspirin are downright horrifying.
Aspirin Does The Opposite
Researchers have reported that aspirin might, in fact, increase your risk for stroke, heart attack, macular degeneration (blindness), and cataract formation! You didn't hear anything about these findings because no one reported on them in the popular press. So if you don't read medical journals in your spare time, you probably missed these REAL bits of news.
Here's what the researchers have to say:
- 40% of people who regularly take large doses of aspirin actually demonstrated an INCREASED risk of both stroke and heart attack.
- Regular aspirin users have a significantly increased risk of macular degeneration with blindness!
- Aspirin use also puts people at a 44% increased risk of cataracts.
Of course, there's always the widely known increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding that accompanies aspirin too . And these sorts of findings weren't published in some lowly rag. No, the highly respected prestigious rags, like the British Medical Journal, Lancet, and the Journal of the American Medical Association, came to a similar conclusion: aspirin shows no benefit in the prevention of heart attacks!

Foods That Should be Eaten Regularly During Menopause
For women, menopause is a dreaded phase on her life cycle. The common misconception of menopause is that the woman is no longer attractive and desired physically and sexually. Menopause is also a period of emotional turmoil when many women suffer from bipolar disorder and depression. Not to mention the endless uncomfortable physical symptom she has to battle with such as hot flushes and night sweats which keeps her awake at night, mood swings, and lack of interest in sex. Unfortunately, menopause is a phase which all women have to go through. It is encouraged that all women educate themselves on the issue of menopause so that they can help themselves go through menopause gracefully. This article will focus on one of the main area of menopause , that is the type of foods that should be eaten regularly during menopause.
First and foremost, if you have not been taking care of your diet. It is not too late to start making a change. Better late than never. For women during menopause, it is even more essential to take care of your body by making sure you are taking enough nutrients your body needs. Start with eating organics. Organic food is best for you as you can be sure of getting the freshest and best nutrients without contamination. Here are some of the most popular menopause super food which you should increase their amount in your diet, and yes, try get them organic if possible.
1. Soy Milk
Soy milk is very popular at one time due to claims that it can reduce post menopause symptoms such as "hot flushes" and prevent breast cancer. However, the American heart Association claimed that soy isoflavones does not have any effect in menopausal symptoms in their recent study. Despite that, it is also a well known fact that Japanese and some Chinese women suffer less severe menopause symptoms due to their rich diet in soy products such as soy milk, miso and tofu. Personally, I feel that all women should increase the intake of soy for cardiovascular and overall health benefits if not for the sake for menopause relief.
2. Flaxseeds
Increase flaxseed intake is recommended for its high content of lignans and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3s, often in short supply in populations with low-fish diets, promote heart health by reducing cholesterol, blood pressure and plaque formation in arteries. In addition, flaxseed oil is often recommended as a galactagogue. However, eating too many Flax seeds can also cause diarrhea in some people.
3. Fatty Fish
The most widely available source of EPA and DHA is cold water oily fish such as wild salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. Oils from these fish have a profile of around seven times as much omega-3 as omega-6. Farmed salmon, being grain fed, have a higher proportion of omega-6 than wild salmon. Other oily fish such as tuna also contain omega-3 in somewhat lesser amounts. However, there is one thing you should be aware that the potential presence of heavy metals and fat-soluble pollutants like PCBs and dioxins which may accumulate in this cold water fish. So choose your fish carefully.
4. Water, Water, Water
Another important food to include is non other than water. Women during menopause should make it a habit to consume at least 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day. Make water the beverage of your choice. Increase the intake of fruit and vegetable juices as well.
Last but not least, cut down on all types of refined carbohydrates such as white bread, muffins, cookies, pasta, package cereals and cakes. Also totally eliminate processed food, caffein, alcohol in your diet. If you are a smoker, it is time to quit now. Your body does not need more burden of unhealthy habits. With these basic changes in your diet, you are on your way to a more comfortable and sweat free menopause. For more informative articles on menopause relief, head over to http://www.agematter.com.

Don't be Afraid of Menopause
Heredity, living conditions, and childbearing all play a part in the menopause. Its arrival may be hastened by a bad environment and those who have never given birth. Early menopause may result from disease or the surgical removal of the ovaries.
This phase in a woman's life marks the end of her reproductive cycle. The monthly menstrual flow may stop suddenly or gradually. The first sign of menopause is irregular menstrual bleeding. Periods may be light one month and heavy the next until they eventually cease. Twelve months after the last period, a woman is no longer fertile.
Because of the change in hormone levels, a woman who has reached the menopause may experience other symptoms as well. These include hot flashes, a warm feeling in the chest moving to the face and neck followed by sweating which may last for 15 minutes.
Falling estrogen levels may cause itching, especially in the genitals, vaginal dryness, dizzy spells, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, lack of energy, abdominal bloatedness, digestive troubles, pain, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, breathlessness and palpitations.
Estrogen also influences the growth of the breast, uterus, vagina, muscles, and skin. Lack of this hormone can make one susceptible to circulatory diseases and loss of calcium from the bones.
Without estrogen, the skin becomes wrinkled, breasts flatten and droop, the womb and ovaries shrink, and the vagina becomes prone to infections. The risk of a heart attack and arthritis also increases.
Not all women, however, suffer during the menopause. Although they may age noticeably, most remain physically, mentally, and sexually active after the change of life. Some, in fact, welcome the menopause because it is the ideal time to have sex without the burden of pregnancy.
Most of the above conditions can be remedied with a doctor's help. Estrogen replacement therapy may be prescribed to ease the pain and discomfort of menopause. But this is usually done for a short period of time since estrogen use in postmenopausal women may cause breast tenderness, gastric upset, swelling of the ankles, and breast and uterine cancer.
A healthy woman need not fear the arrival of the menopause. For her, it may be marked simply by the end of the menstrual flow. But if she experiences any of the above symptoms, she should see a doctor.
“Get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days to protect against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and other conditions associated with aging. More vigorous exercise for longer periods may provide further benefit and is particularly important if you are trying to lose weight. Exercise can also help reduce stress,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

What is Brachytherapy?
There are several ways of giving radiation dosage to a cancerous tumor. The most common method is to deliver the required dosage from an external beam of radiation produced outside the body. In this case the source of radiation beam is located 80-100 cm from the body of the person receiving radiation. Sometimes placing the source of radiation within the tumor might have advantages over delivering radiation from an external source. This method of delivering required radiation from an internal source embedded within the tumor is called brachytherapy.
If you are aware of the inverse square law in physics you would know the dosage of radiation therapy delivery changes by a great proportion depending upon the distance of the radiation source to the intended target. In brachytherapy the source of radiation is within the tumor volume and the proper placement of these sources of radiation within the tumor is of crucial importance.
There are several radioactive isotopes used in the brachytherapy. These include radium-226, cesium-137, cobalt-60, iridium192, iodine-125, gold-198 and palladium-103. Radium has a longer half-life compared to some of the other radioactive isotopes. In the past radium was the primary isotope used in brachytherapy, but recently radium has been largely replaced by cesium, gold and iridium, which have relatively shorter half-life and lower energies and because of this the radiation from these isotopes can be easily shielded.
Brachytherapy can be delivered with devices known as implants. These devices may be in the form of needles or seeds or ribbons. Brachytherapy can be delivered with permanent or temporary implants. These implants might be temporary or permanent. Temporary implants usually have a longer half-life and higher energies compared to the permanent implants. All temporary implants are inserted into the tumor during surgery. The duration of treatment for the temporary implant is usually 1-3 days.
Interstitial low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy is usually used for cancers involving the mouth and oral cavity, pharynx. This mode of treatment is often used in the treatment of sarcomas. Prostate cancer treatment is the most common form of LDR brachytherapy using seeds. Uterine cancer is the most common application of intracavitary LDR treatment. These patients are often isolated to prevent radiation exposure to nursing and other supportive staff during the care of the person.
The most common uses of high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy includes treatment of esophageal cancer, lung cancer and recently breast cancer and prostate cancer. Most HDR treatments are done as outpatient procedures allowing the patients to return to home the same day as treatment. Patients who are receiving treatment for prostate cancer is an exception who may remain in the hospital for 2-3 days during the treatment.

Getting Serious About Breast Cancer Prevention
While it is currently true that there are some very promising advances in breast cancer research and treatment, it is still a prudent course of action to use prevention as your best defense against getting this cancer in the first place, and that is what we are ready to discuss.
Some of these promising treatments and detection tools for breast cancer include genetic testing for certain risk factors that can help women determine preventive courses of action if they are at a higher risk, advanced ways of detecting breast cancer earlier including more sophisticated biopsy methods with minimal invasion, and new and improved breast cancer drugs and tailored courses of treatment.
Heck, I was even reading just the other day about one company that is coming out with new, natural "biochemical" remedies against cancer and other serious maladies for which we have yet to discover excellent, non life threatening treatments.
Perhaps the most obvious of all prevention measures is, of course, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and "live" foods instead of processed, dead foods. Reducing alcohol or eliminating it completely helps to protect against breast cancer. If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption to less than one drink per day.
While there has been discussion and debate about whether red wine may help fight cancer, it is still wise to watch your consumption of even this, since it is, in essence, processed and broken down as a sugar, which causes inflammation.
Inflammation is thought to be a major contributor to all types of cancer, and I tend to agree with this philosophy from the information I've been privy to. Many of the popular diets now that promote overall health, weight maintenance and blood sugar stability are often "anti inflammatory" in nature, they just aren't always advertised that way.
Keep your weight at a healthy level for your age and height. Be especially vigilant not to gain any postmenopausal weight as this has been proven to increase your odds of getting breast cancer. The excess fatty tissue in your body increases your estrogen and the degree of estrogen exposure in your lifetime is linked to breast cancer.
Exercising can help with weight loss or maintenance of a healthy weight, therefore lowering your risk of breast cancer. If you do the weight bearing aerobics, you will add the extra bonus of keeping your bones strong.
Limit the amount of fats in your dietary intake. A lower fat diet has a moderate effect, but still decreases the risk of breast cancer. Hormone replacement therapy taken long term has been associated with an increase in breast cancer. If you are taking hormone replacements, you should probably talk to your doctor about other therapies to minimize menopausal symptoms.
There is not clear cut evidence linking birth control pills and a higher incidence of breast cancer. The newer oral contraceptives have a lower dose than the older contraceptives. Studies continue on this subject, but it may be something to think about when considering forms of birth control.
Excessive use of antibiotics is being scrutinized as a possible risk factor in the development of breast cancer. Exposure to pesticides is also being looked at in relation to breast cancer. Use caution concerning long term use of antibiotics and limit exposure to pesticides.
Areas of research that are promising and natural are retinoids and flaxseed. Retinoids, a form of vitamin A, may inhibit growth of cancer cells. Flaxseed lowers the amount of estrogen circulating in your body.
Both flaxseed and retinoid compounds are being studied for their role in breast cancer prevention, and are also known to be of benefit in heart and circulatory health, and flaxseed is known for it's digestive benefits as well. Most foods that are beneficial for cancer prevention wear many hats when it comes to health benefits, which is always a good thing.
Regular screenings by mammograms and self examinations will help to detect any early signs of breast cancer. Nothing is guaranteed to eliminate the risk, however lifestyle changes can reduce your risks significantly and are often simple and easy steps to take. You just have to know what they are...

Missed Diagnosis of Breast Cancer? your Legal Options
There are few things more frightening than finding out that you or a loved one has breast cancer. Finding out that it had gone undetected or misdiagnosed by a skilled medical professional can be devastating. In these situations, a tumor that could have been treated with early detection may prove fatal.
According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2007 an estimated 178,480 new cases of breast cancer in women will be reported and approximately 40,460 women will die from breast cancer. After skin cancer, it is the most common type of cancer in women.
Disease Development
Breast cancer develops when the body manufactures and retains unneeded blood cells. These cells collect in various tissues of the breast, eventually forming a mass called a tumor. Tumors can be benign (not cancerous), or malignant (cancerous).
Malignant tumors, if not detected early, can spread into surrounding tissue, damaging that tissue and nearby organs. Cancerous cells can also break off from the tumor in the breast and enter the blood stream. When this happens, new tumors can form anywhere else in the body.
Breast cancer develops over stages, which correspond to the severity of the cancer. Stage 1 is the earliest stage, when the cancer has not spread from the breast area and the tumor is relatively small. The cancer progresses through Stage 4, where the tumor has spread to other parts of the body and is likely to be lethal.
Treatment methods and success rates vary depending on the stage of the cancer’s development. If it’s detected at the earlier stages, the woman is more likely to be able to spare the breast and lymph nodes under the arm. At later stages, the breast and lymph nodes may have to be removed. Women with Stage 4 cancer may be treated to prevent the further spread of cancer, but generally cannot be cured.
Importance of Early Detection
Thanks to advances in medical technology and a growing understanding of cancer, medical professionals are able to detect breast cancer in the early stages. They can also recognize certain factors that may increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. A health plan can be developed which involves preventative measures and frequent mammograms.
Because cancer is very difficult to treat once it has spread, early detection is essential in combating it. Utah medical malpractice firm G. Eric Nielson & Associates handled a case where a woman’s doctor misdiagnosed her breast cancer as a cyst and failed to perform tests to verify. Once the cancer was detected, it was no longer treatable.
In situations like this, where doctors either fail to diagnose breast cancer or treat it negligently, there may be legal options available. If a doctor misdiagnoses breast cancer by falling below the appropriate standard of care, there may be an issue of medical negligence. Where a doctor fails to follow up when suspecting breast cancer, it may be considered medical malpractice.
In these situations, a doctor may be liable for a number of costs:
· Treatment costs
· Future medical expenses
· Loss of quality of life
· Pain and suffering
· Wrongful death
Obtaining compensation for your medical bills, or the pain and suffering associated with misdiagnosis, is possible through a skilled medical malpractice attorney. Because the medical field is complex, medical malpractice is a sophisticated area of the law.
Medical malpractice firms like Salt Lake City’s G. Eric Nielson & Associates are familiar with the terminology and processes needed for a successful medical malpractice claim.

A Cancer Survivor Story: Increase Your Probability Of Success
Remember prediction/prophecy is a specific outcome in the future based on thoughts and feelings you are having in the present and actions you are taking in the present. This principle is science now. But the powerful part of this principle is if you make minor shifts in the present, it creates a dramatic shift in the future; this is the "Butterfly Effect".
What follows is a list highlighting the connection between strategy and probability. All actions that you see suggested are a win-win; truly.
1. If you are diagnosed with cancer or any serious illness and initiate emotional work right away or at anytime, you have a much higher probability of curing that illness. And usually this emotional work has to do with forgiveness of yourself or others.
2. If you do a detoxification program at an appropriate time after chemo or radiation with a highly qualified professional you have a lower probability of the illness coming back.
3. If you combine an alternative protocol with your conventional protocol under the supervision of highly qualified professional, you have higher probability of success with less side-effects and any permanent damage.
4. If you look at your illness as a gift and learning experience you have a much higher probability of many things: less pain, better decision making, successful cure, growth spiritually, better relationships with those around you.
5. If you quiet your thoughts around fear and allow your wisdom to rise up in you have a higher probability of success.
6. If you eat well and exercise, the probability of success is higher.
The list could go on but I am sure you see the principle.
I was shopping in a cookware store a few weeks back and got talking to the manager. I was driving her crazy about finding non-aluminum cookware! She was very helpful and we had a good time exploring which cookware is totally aluminum-free. For some reason after my second trip to the store, I said the reason I was little kooky about this aluminum issue was because I am cancer survivor. It turns out she is too!
Cancer survivors have a way finding each other. She told me she has survived cancer twice. I told her about my work and asked her very gently if she had explored any of the emotional issues that might have led to the cancer? She said, "No, she knows where it came from, it's all genetic with her." I said, "That certainly may be part of it but the reasons are sometimes multi-dimensional." She seemed receptive to that idea. In that moment, I was grateful that I am getting the word out there.
Many people who have been thru cancer have not thought about the emotional issues. I only hope that my writing and other's work will educate them to the emotional dynamic behind illness. For me it is a mission, one that I am honored to be given.

Humanistic Cancer Care
For many who are diagnosed with Cancer, the initial reaction is shock mixed with fear. While coping with the news, having support during a time of uncertainty and stress makes a world of difference. Several cancer treatment centers, such as the Eastchester Center for Cancer Care, are acknowledging the importance of going beyond treating the physical challenge of cancer. Cancer centers now focus on providing emotional support through both a warm environment and a compassionate staff.
"One of the things we thought of is, 'Well, let's try to make the downstairs, the reception area, look very much like a house.' As much as is possible in a public place".
To supplement oncological treatment, many cancer care groups offer additional therapies to give patients a balanced array of support. Many of these humanistic treatments help patients to cope with the challenges that coincide with battling cancer.
"We also have a yoga therapists that comes and she does seated yoga with the patients who are getting chemotherapy. And people love her, they love to do the yoga. And apparently she was able to decrease someone's blood pressure by doing yoga therapy."
Patients who have survived the fight with cancer, often look back on their time of need with mixed emotions. Many have had their lives changed by the personal impact a humanistic cancer center has had on their lives.
"I feel like I was getting a gift by getting cancer because I never would have met all these people. These beautiful people that I met here."
While the battle with cancer is ongoing, many take solace in knowing that they are not alone in their struggle.

Bleeding After Menopause Does not Always Mean Cancer Growth
Bleeding after menopause may happen to some women. It may be because of the vagina getting dry and lost its elasticity as the estrogen level is decreasing. But it is not the normal symptom to get bleeding after menopause. So you must consult your doctor immediately. Sometimes the bleeding may happen because of taking birth control medicines, hormone imbalance etc. It may happen because of some non cancerous growth in the uterine.
Its common belief that Bleeding after menopause does mean cancer growth but its not true. But there is possibility of cancer in womb. If there is any abnormal bleeding after menopauses, then you have to check it whether it is happening because of cancer growth. Even if you have smell or pain in vagina, then you have to consult your doctor.
Normally post menopause bleeding will occur due to some other gynecological problems. So you need not fear that there is always a chance of cancer. Mostly the post menopause bleeding is because of hormone imbalance. Women who undertake hormone replacement therapy may experience this problem frequently. Lack of estrogen causes dryness in the lining of the uterine and the blood vessels in uterine breaks down and cause bleeding.
Polyps and fibroids may also cause post menopause bleeding. While polyps causes light bleeding, fibroids causes heavy bleeding that requires treatment immediately. Sometimes any over growth in the uterine lining may also cause bleeding. And 20 % of such growth may be because of cancer.
If the patient is suffering from excessive bleeding after menopause, then the examination of the pelvis region including vagina and cervix is a must. A Doctor will examine her by passing a small tube device through the cervix. The doctor may also ash her to take a complete scan of uterine. Treatment will be given after examining her past medical report. If she had taken any hormone replacement therapy or if she had any fibroids then the doctor will give her treatment accordingly. If the bleeding is caused because of any cancer growth in the uterine, advanced treatment will be given including surgery.
Menopause bleeding may occur due to hysterectomy. Nearly 6, 00,000 hysterectomies are performed in US every year. If you do not have your menstrual cycle for more than one year, then only you will be considered that you are undergoing menopause. Sometimes you may have irregular periods. So you need not confuse that menstrual cycle not happening within 28 cycles as menopause.
Ovary cancer may lead bleeding after menopause. This requires surgical treatment including removal of the ovary. Even mental stress, strain, weight loss or weight gain suddenly may cause post menopause bleeding. Consuming more pills or sexual intercourse may also cause bleeding. If you have post menopause bleeding or more than two weeks and if the bleeding is heavy that you require changing your pad every 1 hour, then you must consult your doctor immediately.

What is Asbestosis?
This lung condition is characterized by widespread filling and inflammation of the lung spaces with asbestos fibers. It can develop as long as 15 to 20 years after regular exposure to asbestos has ended. A potent cocarcinogen, asbestos aggravates the risk of lung cancer in cigarette smokers.
What Causes it?
Asbestosis is caused by the inhalation of small asbestos fibers. These fibers move in the direction of airflow and penetrate the breathing passages. Sources include the mining and milling of asbestos, the construction industry (where asbestos is used in a prefabricated form), and the fireproofing and textile industries. It has also has been used in the production of paints, plastics, and automobile brake and clutch linings.
Asbestos-related diseases develop in families of workers as a result of exposure to the fibrous dust shaken off workers' clothing at home. Asbestosis also strikes people who are exposed to fibrous dust or waste piles from nearby asbestos plants.
Inhaled fibers become encased in a brown, protein like sheath rich in iron called ferruginous bodies or asbestos bodies found in sputum and lung tissue.
What are its symptoms?
The first symptom is usually shortness of breath on exertion, typically after 10 years' exposure. As lung damage becomes more extensive, this increases, until eventually the person is short of breath, even at rest. Advanced disease also causes a cough, chest pain, recurrent respiratory infections, and rapid breathing.
Asbestosis may cause complications, such as an enlarged heart and pulmonary hypertension. Club-shaped fingers commonly occur.
How is it Diagnosed?
The persons history reveals occupational, family, or neighborhood exposure to asbestos fibers. A physical exam reveals characteristic, dry crackles at the bases of the lungs. An arterial blood gas test reveals a decreased oxygen level and a low carbon dioxide level. Finally, a chest X-ray and pulmonary function studies help diagnose this disease.
How is it Treated?
This disease can't be cured. The goal of treatment is to relieve respiratory symptoms and, in advanced disease, to control the complications.
Respiratory symptoms may be relieved by chest physical therapy techniques such as controlled coughing. Aerosol therapy, inhaled mucolytics, and increased fluids (at least 3 quarts [3 liters] daily) may also help relieve respiratory symptoms. Diuretics, digitalis glycoside preparations, and salt restriction may be indicated for people with cor pulmonale. Oxygen deficiency requires oxygen administration by mask or by a mechanical ventilator. Respiratory infections require prompt administration of antibiotics.
What can a person with asbestosis do?
• To prevent infections, avoid crowds and persons with infections and receive influenza and pneumococcal vaccines .
• To improve your breathing, undergo physical reconditioning, conserve your energy in daily activities, and use relaxation techniques.
