The Way We Were

A lot of the beautiful things from the past are gone. I sometimes think we've lost some of our greatest art and heirlooms as technology advances. No one stops to take a look at the cost of progress, but it is harsh. Of course, there are advances, in medicine and in comfort, but I don't think we should ever loose the things we value from our past.

My grandmother's home was filled with such items. China figurines, Irish Linen, and a grandfather clock. I remember the clock most of all. It dominated the corner of the dining room. Every fifteen minutes it chimed once. Every hour it marked the hour.

I've used mantle clocks in the dining room. However there is nothing as charming as a grandfather clock. The whirring of the pendulum, the chimes at the hour. I find few things as relaxing. There is also an old world charm to their elegance that cannot be matched.

A grandfather clock is a statement. It is a validation of style. Art can go out of style. A person must buy furniture every 5 years to remain in style. But, a grandfather clock will be an eye catcher and impress friends for decades to come.

I loved this blog on clocks. I never thought of taking a clock outdoors.
